Chateau Thomas Winery was founded by Dr. Charles R. Thomas in 1984. Dr. Thomas was a practicing Obstetrician-Gynecologist in Indianapolis when he began making wine for a hobby. He traveled to Napa for several years studying under famous winemakers until he opened his own winery on the south side of Indianapolis.
In 1997, Dr. Thomas moved his winery to Plainfield, just minutes west of the Indianapolis International Airport off I70 west at Exit 66.
Dr. Thomas is always reaching out to experiment and learn new techniques in the winemaking process. He focuses on making wines that have richness, dimension, elegance, and texture. He believes that wine should be a complex beverage that may be served with a variety of foods in a variety of different atmospheres.
Our customers are drawn to richer, more intense styles and we plan to continue making our wines with concentration, complexity and individuality.
During its history, Chateau Thomas wines have been entered in international competitions and have won over 400 medals and awards, including many Double-Gold Medals, and a Best-in-the-Nation award. Two wines voted to be of the 100 best wines east of the Rockies in 1999, and a Corning Cup for the best red wine at the International Eastern. Chateau Thomas Winery has also been awarded with four Governor's Trophies at the Indy International Wine Competition (the nation's second largest international wine competition) as the best winery in Indiana.
Chateau Thomas wines have been served at the Governor's Mansion, to the President and the Vice-President of the United States, at the National Democratic Governor's Conference in Washington, D.C., and was the official wine of American Trans Airline.
Chateau Thomas Wines were the only wines served to 130 attendees of a Grand Banquet for the Confrerie des Compagnons Gouste Vin de Normandy held in a 300-year old Chateau in Rouen, France.
The wines of Chateau Thomas are available in over 200 retail locations in Indiana including wine shops, grocery outlets, and some of the finest restaurants including 31 Applebee's locations throughout the state.
The winery is continuing to expand its presence all over Indiana. Chateau Thomas has now partnered with National Wine and Spirits, an Indiana Wholesale House, to expand our presence and make our products available to everyone in Indiana.
Chateau Thomas produces all its wines from Vinifera (old world) grapes harvested from the finest vineyards in California, Oregon, and Washington State and continues to strive to produce the fine wines.
These grapes are chilled to 34° then shipped to our winery in 1-ton bins by refrigerated trucks to ensure freshness within hours of being harvested. When the grapes arrive at our winery at Plainfield they are then crushed and the fermentation process begins.
Several styles and types of wines are produced, including:
Dry white wines (Pinot Gris, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, etc.)
Dry red wines (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, etc.)
Sweet white wines (Riesling, Gewürztraminer, etc.)
Sweet red wines (Sweet Aubergine)
Dessert wines (Late Harvest Zinfandel, Port, Sherry)
Sparkling wine
